The Rag Tag Manifesto

We Rag-Tag Research Geeks hold the following truths to be the basis for a life well lived. These 5 principles are our Prescription for being healthy, happy and human:

1. Carpe Diem.

Senior CoupleIt's all too easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day details of work and hectic schedules, deadlines and to-do lists. Sometimes we can forget that the reason for all this running around is supposed to be a better life.

You don't have to drop everything and run away to Myrtle Beach in order to get the most out of life. All it takes is a little time each day. Recognize the little joys. Be thankful. And carve out some time for the things you're passionate about.

One of the biggest lessons we learned as we studied the science of happiness for Issue #2 of Rag Tag Alive is that the greatest fulfillment comes from giving to others. Being a part of a cause that's bigger than yourself makes you happier, and can even help you live longer.

2. Do What You Can And Don't Feel Guilty

Young Son With His Career-Minded MotherWe don't know about you, but we're so over feeling guilty. We just can't live up to the standard set by some in the health community. We can't exist on nothing but organic greens and tofu. We're gonna have to eat at McDonalds sometimes.

And there will be days when we miss our workout. Or pig out at the office party, or have more than a bit too much wine.

But we're NOT going to let that get in the way of doing what we can. Maybe we can't spend an hour at the gym... but we can walk for 20 minutes in the morning. Or at lunch. Maybe we have to hit McDonalds today... but that doesn't mean we have to get the double quarter pounder and supersize the fries.

And it certainly doesn't mean we have to give up and eat that way all the time. What we all CAN do is look for ways to add some healthy into every day. And as long as we're doing what we can, we're going to feel good about it.

3. Mediterranean Is The Way To Eat

mediterraneandietWe used to say that different diets work for different people, and if the goal was nothing but dropping 20 pounds that might still be true. But over the last few years we've seen more and more research that convinces us the Mediterranean diet is the lifestyle to shoot for.

As much as possible we recommend a diet heavy on the fruits and veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats - especially olive oil. Meats should be more of a side dish, and should be mostly fish and seafood with lean chicken and turkey next in line. Eat red meat only rarely.

Nothing's really off limits to the Mediterranean lifestyle which is one reason we like it. That makes it much easier to mesh with #2 above. And who can argue with a diet that recommends wine and pasta??

4. Get Up and Move!

Senior bicyclistGetting exercise is really the #1 best way to be everything we want: it makes you healthier. It stimulates the hormones that make you happier. It helps you live longer. And above all, it gives you the energy to do all those things that make life well lived.

But again, do what you can. We can't all run marathons... but we can all do something.

One of the things we are most passionate about is trumpeting the dangers of sitting all day. If you have a desk job, find a way to get out of your chair as often as possible. Better yet, see if you can work out some kind of standing or even treadmill desk. These don't have to be expensive, but they can be life saving.

5. Supplements Can Help
